How Did ‘BLACKPINK’ Become Famous?

Today, we will be looking into KPOP most famous female pop group, ‘BLACKPINK’, in order to learn what it takes to become famous like our favorite famous singers.

What Music Marketing Strategy Did BLACKPINK Use to Become Famous?

We will investigate the music marketing strategy examples of ‘BLACKPINK’ in order to find out what they and their label did, in order to become famous worldwide.

How To Become Famous Like ‘BLACKPINK’?

After that, we will draw conclusions, as to what we must do in order to become famous ourselves.

WHO IS BLACKPINK AND WHO ARE THE KPOP BLACKPINK MEMBERS?

‘BLACKPINK,’ is an all-female pop group formed in South Korea from 2010 – 2016 by the music agency and label YG Entertainment. The group has four female members with musical and individual talents that complement each other for the benefit of the whole group.

‘BLACKPINK’ represent the phrase “pretty isn’t everything”; this symbolizes that the ‘BLACKPINK’ group are a team that have great beauty, but also great talent (Wikipedia).

‘BLACKPINK’ officially debuted their single album “Square One” on August 8, 2016 (Wikipedia).

On the album, the songs “Whistle” and “Boombayah” were the first entries on South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart and the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.

What’s interesting is that to promote their Album, ‘BLACKPINK’ performed live on August 14, 2016, on a South Korean Television show by SBS BROADCASTING GROUP (Scandinavian Broadcasting Systems) called “Inkigayo”.

The following week, August 21st, 2016, the female pop group won its first award during a musical program for “Whistle” on the Inkigayo show.

Who Are the Members of KPOP’s Female Group ‘BLACKPINK’ and how were they recruited?

“BLACKPINK’S” four female members are Jennie, Lisa, Rose and Jisoo.

YG entertainment, recruited these members through worldwide auditions and developed these artists before their debut around 2016.

The first member Jennie (Jennie Kim) –

was born in Seoul Capital Area on January 16, 1996, as an only child. She was the first member recruited into YG Entertainment’s training program around 2011 for a spot in ‘BLACKPINK.’

YG Entertainment’s training program is something that resembles that of American Idol where winning contestants are trained by industry coaches to help develop their talent and be more presentable in public.

Jennie Kim audition for one of YG competitions in South Korea and was selected. Below are some important things that I found, so you and I can better understand what factors worked in Jennie Kim’s favor.

      • Jennie Kim’s mother was a director of CJ E&M (CJ Entertainment & Media). It is known that CJ E&M leads the Korean Wave with its K-Pop content business.

        • Jennie Kim’s father owns a hospital, so it’s fair to say, her family was well-off and connected.

          • At the age of 8, Jennie traveled with her mother to Auckland, New Zealand. She spent five years learning English on top of basic Japanese and Korean. She also attended ACG Parnell College.

            • During her stay in New Zealand, Jennie somehow got displayed in a television special by MBC called “English, must change to survive” *YG has used this footage to push the brand of “BLACKPINK” even more as the “BLINK” fans only know.

              • Jennie Kim auditioned for YG Entertainment around 2010 (Fandom wiki) and was selected as one of ‘BLACKPINK’S’ main rappers and main vocalist mainly because of her ability to speak fluent English.=

            ‘BLACKPINK’S’ second member was Lisa,

who was introduced to the public around 2012 in a video that was posted on YG Entertainment’s YouTube Channel.

Seems this is a usual tactic from YG Entertainment. They hold auditions for upcoming artist with solid talent and marketable qualities then place them as trainees. In the case of “BLACKPINK” members were being trained upwards of 6 years.

During that time, they would do occasional promotions, almost as a tease, to get the fans attention and excitement. The Artist’s also had opportunities to collaborate with establish musicians.

As we aim to become famous singers or creatives in the entertainment industry, we must pay attention to this type of music marketing strategy examples.

Lisa (born Pranpriya Manoban) was born March 27th, 1997, in Buriram Province, Thailand (Wikipedia).

She legally changed her name to Lalisa (meaning praised) as a way to welcome prosperity into her life. She was advised by a fortune teller to do so. How awesome is that?… lol

Lisa has participated in various dance competitions and had the desire to be a part of YG Entertainment from a young age. She has appeared in various television shows prior, mostly because her dancing led her to be part of a talented dance crew.

Lisa was part of an eleven-member dance crew called “We Zaa Cool” (Wikipedia).

At the age of 13, she was elected as a trainee after outperforming 4000 other candidates.

Lisa is currently the lead rapper, dancer, and vocalist of ‘Blackpink’.

The KPOP crew ‘BLACKPINK’S’ third member was Jisoo

Jisoo (Kim Ji-soo) was born January 3, 1955, in Gunpo, Gyeonggi, South Korea. Jisoo is the youngest sibling of 3 in her family. She has a brother and sister. (Wikipedia).

Jisoo attended the school of performing arts Seoul

Jisoo is ‘BLACKPINK’S’ lead vocalist since her acceptance as a YG Entertainment trainee around July 2011.

Jisoo has also stated that one of YG Entertainment’s staff tried recruiting her at a concert they were having before. The reason being, Jisoo doesn’t just sing, but is also a very famous actress.

In fact, before her deal with ‘BLACKPINK’ she had appeared on commercials and other brand deals throughout south Korea.

            ‘BLACKPINK’S FOURTH MEMBER ‘Rose’

Rose (Roseanne Park) was born February 11, 1997, in Auckland, New Zealand. Her parents were immigrants from South Korea, and she has one elder sister (Wikipedia).

As a child, Rose, learned to play the piano and the guitar. She also spent a lot of time singing and performing with her secondary school’s choir.

At 15 years old, Rose attended an audition in Sydney, Australia for South Korean record label YG Entertainment. What was interesting was that her father was the one that applied for her to auditioned.

He came across the opportunity, and felt regardless of his daughter’s long commute, she would be the best fit for the opportunity.

As a result, Rose became YG Entertainment’s trainee in May 2012 by besting upwards of 700 other competitors.

Today, rose is ‘BLACKPINK’S’ main vocalist. How awesome is that?

HOW DID KPOP MOST FAMOUS FEMALE GROUP BLACKPINK BECOME FAMOUS?

KPOP most famous female pop group ‘BLACKPINK’ became famous because of YG Entertainment’s involvement. In addition, the female group had their own individual qualities and successes that were an addition to the record label that signed them.

The path to success and fame was very easy for ‘BLACKPINK’ due to having connections, money, audiences, and the proper music marketing strategy for the group.

This female group were hand picked for having certain qualities, talents, and successes in life. YG Entertainment was very strategic in their thinking as to who to hire for the respective roles within the group.

If the CEO of YG Entertainment made a statement about what qualities would make a person become a famous pop star, I truly believe he would highlight some of these qualities:

              1. Looks is a factor There is something about a person’s physical aesthetics, the way they dress, talk and other mannerisms that make them very likeable.

The members of ‘BLACKPINK’ are all females that most would consider attractive and likeable. Keep in mind, its not just about seeing them attractive physically, its also about other things like

Their mannerisms, speech patterns, and how they deal with people. There is a lot of simple and unnoticeable things that can make someone likeable. Some people have it in spades, while others may just need to work on that part with some effort.

The female artists of ‘BLACKPINK’ are all likeable.

                  1. Talent is another factor indeed. You can’t argue that ‘BLACKPINK’S’ FEMALE ARTISTS are very talented musicians. They can sing, dance, rap, and play instruments.

Well, I should say some of the members can. But then again, that is the beauty of being in a group. The combine talents of each of the female artists within ‘BLACKPINK’ helps the group as a whole.

Also keep in mind, when you already have likeability traits, the threshold for how talented you need to be, is not going to be very high.

Just think about it, each of these girls within ‘BLACKPINK’ were trained for years under YG Entertainment’s experienced staff. So, they only had to be talented to a certain level of competence to be chosen as part of the group.

                    1. One more important quality that would help a person become famous is their past achievements. ‘BLACKPINK’ female artists had done some spectacular things already and were already doing things in the public’s eye that would garnish attention.

YG Entertainment needed already packaged stars to make ‘BLACKPINK’ RISE TO FAME that much quicker.

For example: Jisoo of ‘BLACKPINK’ was already a famous actress prior to joining the group.

Lisa was a dancer with a history of being on television and other auditions where her name was known already.

Jennie (not only from a very rich family *my opinion) but she had a major television network do a documentary about her. How did she pull that off? Or what did her parents plan for her, as connected individuals in the media industry? Who knows?

Rose one of the most talented musicians could play the guitar, sing, play the piano and much more. That is a star already packaged for the group ‘BLACKPINK’.

YG Entertainment chose the right candidates during their auditions when building ‘BLACKPINK’. The female artists were talented, likeable, and they were already famous in their circles.

So, it was easy for them to become famous.

All YG Entertainment did was do what any other smart record label would do, which is market their artist properly to as many audiences as possible.

WHAT ARE THE MUSIC MARKETING STRATEGY EXAMPLES THAT MADE BLACKPINK FAMOUS?

We have seen how YG Entertainment uses mass media in promoting ‘BLACKPINK’ and the building of a great product in the music market.

The genius marketing strategy examples we have seen, made ‘BLACKPINK’S’ RISE TO FAME very quick.

These marketing strategies will also show us how to become famous as musicians, influencers or like our most cherished famous singer idols.

                  Marketing strategy example 1

‘BLACKPINK’ officially debuted their single album “Square One” on August 8, 2016 (Wikipedia).

The promotion for this album was done through a South Korean Television show by SBS BROADCASTING GROUP (Scandinavian Broadcasting Systems) called “Inkigayo”.

This was a show that already had a lot of viewers and other artists that have dedicated fans watching them.

YG Entertainment took things in high gear my the undoubtable striking of a deal that allowed their group ‘BLACKPINK’ to reach the masses very quickly.

                  Marketing strategy example 2

YG Entertainment selects new members for their intended group ‘BLACKPINK’ and signs them on as trainees.

This is perhaps the best thing a record label can do to make sure their future group not only becomes famous, but successful.

YG Entertainment had spent about 6 years with the female group members of ‘BLACKPINK’ making sure the product (the members of the group) was the best in the market.

During that time, they had to refine their talents and make sure they could work together effectively.

                  Marketing Strategy example 3

During those 6 years training the new recruits for the group ‘BLACKPINK’, the female artists were collaborating with other fellow artist within YG Entertainment’s label.

The group members did SINGLE releases with other members within YG Entertainment as solo careers. This introduces the artist to the fans of fans of establish artist and got their name out first.

In addition, they did the same things with international artists as well. This in my opinion was a brilliant strategy on YG Entertainment’s end.

On top of all that, YG Entertainment built anticipation about the building of an all-female KPOP Group. Something that the fans clearly wanted and were eagerly waiting for.

YG Entertainment is one of the big three agencies in South Korea, with a track record of building successful artists and groups. Just looking at these three marketing strategy examples, we now know why.

The moment ‘BLACKPINK’ was formed under YG Entertainment, their success was all but guaranteed. They are very strategic in building music pop groups and marketing them worldwide.

As new singers or current musicians, the marketing strategy example of ‘BLACKPINK,’ should teach us a valuable lesson about how to become famous ourselves.

Being Strategic, having the RIGHT qualities, being supported by a great label or mentor are all the lessons we’ve seen and learned today.

Let’s now draw the lessons we must apply today into our lives, in order to become famous for our own talents, ideas and business.

HOW TO BECOME FAMOUS LIKE BLACKPINK, KPOP TOP FEMALE GROUP?

Today we have learned that in order to become famous like ‘BLACKPINK’ (KPOP FEMALE GROUP), we need to have a history of achievement in the field.

We need a marketable value we can sell in the entertainment marketplace, and most important of all, the backing of a solid and strategic record label.

What do I mean when I say you need a history of achievement in order to become famous?

                    Well think about it.

Why were the female artists of ‘BLACKPINK’ chosen to be in the pop group?

Yes, they did audition; but during their audition, they showed qualities to YG Entertainment that makes superstars.

First of all, these females were all likeable personalities with enough talent to outperform the majority of the competition.

Secondly, because they had worked on their individual skills, they showed how valuable they would be if they were chosen as part of a group.

They had their own fan bases already from doing creative jobs like, acting, dancing, singing, rapping and instrument playing. They were auditioning for a role, which they have been doing in their personal lives already.

In the eyes of a major record label like YG Entertainment, bringing them on as the members of ‘BLACKPINK’ would be an addition not a subtraction.

Believe it or not, countless record labels have complained about artists who do not know what it means to get signed-on to a major label.

Some artists believe, their work is done as soon as they are signed onto a major record label.

Most would never realize, that is the point where their work doubles. Because now, not only do you need to follow a set number of rules on your contract, but you also need to perform to recoup the investments made on your behalf.

So, make sure you are working on the marketable skills that will be an addition to a major record label, not a subtraction. Marketable skills such as, the audience you have cultivated already.

The talent you have perfected. The connections you have made. The promotional tactics you have learned.

When you have marketable values such as these, a major record label would be more than glad to amplify your efforts to becoming famous as your favorite singers, or entertainment idols.

One last piece of advice is to make sure you choose the right record label.

You will never be famous as a musician or in any other field, if the main game changers (like record labels, OR talent agencies) that you are relying on are not the type of companies OR people that you should be with.

We have already seen the value of a solid agency like YG Entertainment. They have a history of breaking out artist not only domestically, but internationally as well.

On top of that, they show their ability to strategize to become successful.

YG entertainment, taking on new recruits and training them for upwards of 6 years is a level of dedication that only a serious and talented organization can do. Just think about it.

I am pretty sure, they had to deal with a lot of artists, who don’t feel things are moving along fast enough.

So, today’s advice is about developing marketable skills for the talent, idea, or business you want to become famous, rich, and successful for.

Perfect your skills, get in the public’s eye, and start cultivating your own audiences.

Finally, understand that no one man is an island. You are going to need the backing of some major talented individuals in the game.

Be smart and mingle with the talented ones that have your best interest at heart.
